What Protect Duty Means for You?
Protect Duty is a new piece of national legislation that will take effect in 2023. The legislation aims to teach business owners and operators about counter terrorism so they can help prevent or mitigate the risks of a terrorist attack on their properties.
The United Kingdom has experienced far too many terrorist attacks in recent years. The UK Government wants to do everything possible to protect people whenever they enter public places or engage with businesses. Since these places usually attract large crowds, they are the perfect target for terrorist attacks. That is why all the emphasis is on protecting these public and commercial spaces.
How Does This Affect You?
If you operate a public venue with at least a 100-person capacity, you’ll have to follow the guidelines of the Protect Duty legislation to comply with the new law. Businesses employing at least 250 people will also have to follow the law.
The requirements are as follows:
· Undertake free counter terrorism training and advice
· Assess your commercial property or public space for the most vulnerable areas
· Take action to mitigate the risks in these areas
· Create a counter terrorism plan
· Work with the local authorities to create a counter terrorism plan
As a result, you’ll need to invest more time and money to adequately train your employees on how to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the threats of terrorist attacks. Since you probably don’t have the knowledge and skills to do this on your own, you’ll need to hire a professional security company to assist you.
